How to Find and Pick an Instructor

Choosing the right ADI makes learning safer, faster, and more enjoyable.

Step-by-step

  4. 4Meet or call for a chat — you should feel comfortable
  5. 5Ask about lesson structure, prices, and success rates

Green badge · Fully qualified ADI

On the official DVSA register. Can take you all the way to test independently. Green badge must be clearly displayed on the windscreen.

Pink badge · Trainee (PDI)

Still learning how to teach and not fully qualified. Pink badge must also be displayed. Always check badge colour and verify status.

Legal requirement
Anyone charging for driving lessons (or anything of monetary value) must display their ADI badge on the windscreen. Giving paid instruction without being properly registered (or properly supervised as a trainee) is illegal. Only around 30% of candidates pass the final Part 3 test (the ability to teach) — green-badge instructors have significant training and experience.
