Getting Your Provisional Licence

Provisional licence checklist

Who can apply
- You must be 17 or older (16 if you receive certain disability living allowances — check GOV.UK)
- You must live in Great Britain
- You must not have a driving ban
- You must declare any medical conditions to the DVLA
How to apply
- Go to gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence
- Fill in the online form (£34) or paper form by post (£43)
- Prepare a passport-style photo
- Provide proof of identity and address
- Submit and wait 1–3 weeks for the photocard

21+, full licence 3+ years, insured car with L plates
Important rules
Insurance is mandatory. L plates are required. No motorways on a provisional licence.
