Getting Your Provisional Licence

You cannot drive or have lessons without this plastic card.

Provisional licence checklist

Who can apply

  • You must be 17 or older (16 if you receive certain disability living allowances — check GOV.UK)
  • You must live in Great Britain
  • You must not have a driving ban
  • You must declare any medical conditions to the DVLA

How to apply

  1. Go to gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence
  2. Fill in the online form (£34) or paper form by post (£43)
  3. Prepare a passport-style photo
  4. Provide proof of identity and address
  5. Submit and wait 1–3 weeks for the photocard

21+, full licence 3+ years, insured car with L plates

Important rules
Insurance is mandatory. L plates are required. No motorways on a provisional licence.
